Are you and have you let your dog down ...You want and we all want that Perfect Dog! Yes!
We also want that perfect spouse, perfect family, perfect house, perfect body ... okay by now you should be catching onto my point here ... I hope. ;) So what I am saying is, we all MUST work at these wants as they do NOT come perfect requiring work and maintenance to continue a good and healthy relationship be it whatever it is! :) ♥ ♥ ♥ Have you let your dog down??!!!
Are you being fair to him or her?? Have you made promises to yourself, to your dog and their breeder and not fulfilled those promises?? You must ask yourself and most importantly even waaaay before you ever consider bringing a dog into your lives, are you committed to giving your dog the balanced structure and foundation he/she requires let alone are you rewarding yourself with the balanced structure you need in your daily life? I say this from experience of seeing way too many dogs and or animals each and everyday where they have been "Let Down" :( ♥ ♥ ♥ I highly recommend this book!!!!
Lipstick and the Leash by Camilla Gray-Nelson Camilla has spent her life living with and studying animals and their social behavior. She has used her knowledge of animal behavior to develop her own “natural” approach to dog training, which relies more on animal psychology than physical strength. In her twenty-plus years as a professional trainer, Camilla has helped thousands of dogs and their owners—especially women—live in greater harmony using her secrets of quiet control. PREY DRIVE
Are you aware that Poodles can have Prey Drive?? Some more so than others! Here is where a good foundation established with our dogs will help control this unwanted drive towards small animals. Always remember that a dog is a dog! Please read my post by Authour Unknown on Normal verses Abnormal Dogs opposite on this page. ♥ ♥ ♥ Behaviour Adjustment Training
Grisha Stewart started B.A.T. in Seattle. She has moved to Oregon selling her business Ahimsa Dog Training in Seattle. Both sites have great information to help your dog. BEHAVIOUR
What I want to point out now, is that dogs require exercise and or mind stimulation. Reading the dogs energy and how you interact is very important. Training all dogs with structure and a balanced foundation is a must for a Good Dog Citizen!! BEHAVIOUR TRAINING - A must viewing! Please look below and spend the time with an open mind! This and these guys are the real deal! A huge infinite thank you to each and everyone of them ... Sean O'shea
of The Good Dog Way (posted with permission. Many thanks always Sean!!!) I heard Sean on Jeff Gellmans Podcast! Such a great team!!! Wishing you all continued success on showing so many the TRUE Way!!! Sean O'shea August 22, 2018
A few truths I've learned... -Leading dogs makes them happier, more secure, less stressed, better behaved, more fun, happier. -Correcting bad behavior is the way to change bad behavior. Make bad behavior uncomfortable and good behavior comfortable. -Redirecting and offering alternatives doesn't stop bad behavior. It only does what it says. -Sharing consequences for poor choices is your job and responsibility, whether you enjoy it or not. -Positive reinforcement is awesome for teaching what you want, not so awesome for teaching what you don't. -99% of dog issues come from permissiveness, allowance, softness, doting. -People treat dogs like glass. They're hearty, robust creatures. Their minds and bodies are more resilient than we give them credit for. -E-collars and prong collars, although terribly named, are typically the most effective and easiest tools on the dog. -E-collars and prong collars, although terribly named, are typically the most effective and easiest tools on the owner. -Dogs, like kids, will resist structure, leadership, and guidance. And just like kids, they'll either thrive because of them or suffer in their absence. P.S. This is an old post. I found it as I was doing research for my new book. I figured it would be a good reminder of some basics. :) Thank you so much again Sean O'shea for the above true truths!!!!!! Best in your new plans for the future!!! ;) Cheers Deborah! I came across Jeff Gellman with many questions learning that yes, structure and boundaries are most important more than just obedience. I have since found other trainers with finer tuned training! He helped me with many questions I had when I found some others could not. Behaviour is simply different than obedience. |
Normal vs Abnormal Dogs This was sent to me by a friend with no name as to who wrote these wonderful words!!! While I await word of the name to give well deserved credit I just have to share with you as it is too good not too!!! Thank you to whomever!!!
Here is the link which I have found. The myth of "normal" dogs ♥ ♥ ♥ Recently, a colleague and friend posted a picture on FB accompanied by a caption saying something to the effect of “does anyone have ‘normal’ dogs?” indicating that her dogs had a variety of issues which she was dedicated to working with – separation anxiety, noise sensitivity, fear aggression, etc. “All I ever wanted was a normal dog!” I hear this a lot in my practice and am forced to ask, “Really? You really think you want a ‘normal’ dog?!” What exactly is a ‘normal’ dog? Here are some characteristics of normal dogs:
What we want in a pet dog is abnormal behavior. We want a creature which has evolved for millennia as a hunter to act like prey doesn’t matter. We want dogs to learn to go potty outside the house, even when we bring doggy bathrooms (trees) into our homes as holiday decorations. We want dogs to like every dog and person they meet. We want dogs to be silent animals. We want dogs to walk politely on a loose leash, even though our walking pace is comparatively very slow. (Have you ever been caught behind someone who moves slowly when you’re in a hurry, either walking or driving? Frustrating!) We want dogs to never bite, no matter what, even when they are harassed, abused, and neglected. What we want from dogs are behaviors which are ethologically incompatible with their evolution as a species. We like dogs, but not their “dogginess.” Normal dogs end up in shelters for just this reason. Abnormal dogs get to stay in their homes. Part of the problem is also in what is defined as “normal dog owner” behavior. “Normal” dog owners:
While no dog is perfect, realizing that virtually everything we expect of dogs is unnatural for them highlights the need for training. Part of what makes dogs so wonderful is the fact that they are generally more than happy to exchange behaviors which are rooted in hundreds of thousands of years of instinct for an owner that will spend a few minutes a day training them to offer alternative, incompatible, and socially desirable behaviors. Dogs don’t come “perfect,” whether they are brought into the home as puppies or as adult dogs they need training. Well-behaved dogs rarely happen by chance, they are usually well-trained dogs. “Bad” behavior in dogs is not bad behavior to dogs, it is simply normal behavior. I think that society does dogs a disservice with the assumption that “good behaviors” are the norm and “bad behaviors” are aberrant. It is the dogs that pay for this misunderstanding, often with their lives. It’s like something out of the Twilight Zone. Carefully review the list of normal dog behaviors above. If these are not the behaviors you want, you need to train your dog to offer abnormal behaviors. In doing so, you will leave the ranks of “normal dog owners” and join us crazy folks in the “abnormal dog owner” realm. It’s not so bad – we have lots of treats, toys, and fun here with our “abnormal dogs!” ♥ ♥ ♥ Authour Unknown ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ Once you have boundaries and structure established
